Emerson
for Charlotte
Building a Charlotte that works for everyone.
Ten Key Pillars
1. Smart Growth & Development
Charlotteans are tired of seeing luxury apartments pop up overnight while long-time residents get priced out of their own neighborhoods. Voters want growth - but growth that makes sense.
🡒 I support no-nonsense planning that puts neighborhoods first. That means incentivizing developers to actually talk to the community, creating zoning overlays that are tailored to serve the needs of their neighborhoods, and making sure growth adds value to the people already living there - not just investors looking to cash out.
2. Real Solutions to Homelessness
Whether you live in South End, NoDa, or West Charlotte, you’ve noticed the rise in visible homelessness - and you probably agree that pushing folks from block to block isn’t a solution.
🡒 I’ll champion common-sense, compassionate strategies: more transitional housing, better access to mental - and physical - healthcare with feet on the ground providing in-person care, and real city partnerships with the nonprofits that are already doing the work. The best care is the care you actually receive, and I want to make sure that all Charlotteans are able to access the care they need to make our city healthier, safer, and help those in crisis get back on their feet.
3. Opportunities for Charlotte’s Kids
Every parent and grandparent in this city wants the same thing: to see our kids thrive, stay out of trouble, and become successful adults. But many feel like support drops off once the school bell rings.
🡒 I’ll push for city-sponsored youth programs that provide real mentorship, job training, and access to arts and sports, especially in underfunded neighborhoods. Every child should have access to arts, athletics, and training without their family having to worry about the cost of supplies, fees, or transportation. These are low-cost, high-return investments in our future.
4. A Safer Charlotte Starts with Prevention
Voters want to feel safe - period. But many also recognize that policing alone won’t fix everything. Most folks want balance: strong emergency response and upstream solutions.
🡒 My approach is smart and layered: more support for CMPD to continue the work they are doing where it counts, but also expanded social services to deal with mental health, addiction, and poverty before they become 911 calls. It’s a no-nonsense strategy that makes our neighborhoods stronger.
5. Transportation That Actually Works
We all know Charlotte is a car city - but we’re also sitting in more traffic every year. People are ready for alternatives, but they want it to be reliable, efficient, and connected.
🡒 I’ll fight on behalf of our continued expansion to the light rail, improving our bus system, and to make biking and walking real options, not afterthoughts that interfere with your morning commute. A city of our size deserves a 21st-century transit network that serves everyone. Everyone deserves access like we have in South End.
6. Culture, Creativity, and Civic Pride
Voters are proud of Charlotte - but many feel like our creative voices get drowned out by corporate logos and cookie-cutter buildings. There’s a real hunger for more local flavor and shared spaces.
🡒 I’ll support the full implementation and execution of Charlotte’s previously approved Arts & Culture Master Plan that was developed under the guidance of Priya Sircar. I'll support local artists, makers, and the robust network of groups and partners that already provide much needed support; and I'll make sure every neighborhood has access to beautiful, welcoming public spaces. Culture isn't fluff, it's the soul of our city.
7. Transparent, Accessible Leadership
A growing number of residents feel disconnected from City Hall - especially after recent backroom decisions that left people in the dark. They want honesty, visibility, and someone who will actually show up.
🡒 I’ll be the most transparent Council Member you’ve ever had. That means regular neighborhood meetings, clear communication online, and a genuine effort to make you part of the process. I don't think we need more secret votes. No more surprises.
8. Teamwork with the County - But With Teeth
Most folks don’t care if it’s a city or county responsibility - they just want problems solved. But they do expect Charlotte to take the lead when needed.
🡒 I’ll work closely with Mecklenburg County on big-picture issues like housing, schools, and social services, but I won’t sit on my hands waiting. If the County stalls, the City should step up - plain and simple.
9. Keeping Charlotte Livable for the Middle Class
This is maybe the biggest anxiety voters are feeling: "Will I still be able to afford to live here in five years?" It's not just low-income residents - it's teachers, baristas, office workers, and young families.
🡒 I support common-sense reforms that keep working people in Charlotte: zoning changes that support affordable housing, support for first-time buyers, and community- focused overlays that give neighborhoods a voice in their future. If we want to be a city for everyone, we have to build like it.
10. Building a Beautiful, Resilient City
Our city is growing fast - and with that comes increased pressure on our infrastructure, green space, and public services. People want to see that growth handled wisely.
🡒 I believe in urbanism that works for people and for the long term: more shade trees, better stormwater management, thoughtful development, and walkable neighborhoods. As long-time mayor of Charleston, SC, Joe Riley Jr. once said, “Public space is a civic right.” I’ll bring that same sense of pride, equity, and beauty to Charlotte’s future.
